Friends, Reuters this morning carried two items regarding Israel: one was news about an attack by Israeli fighter jets on Syria. The circumstances and the results of the attack or its motivation are unclear but Syria has suggested their retaliation will come in the form of a surprise!
Of course, the Israelis have bombed Syria before. They struck a few years back attacking a site that was said to be associated with developing weapons of mass destruction. The whole incident has been hushed up and Syria did not retaliate. Whether that remains the case this time is unclear but it is unlikely that Syria, in the middle of a civil war, will want to open another front by attacking nuclear-armed Israel.
The other incident reported by Reuters had to do with the release of a U.N. report and a direction by a U.N. panel to close settlements and remove all settlers or risk being prosecuted for war crimes.
There are about 250 settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, that have been established since the 1967 Middle East war and they hold an estimated 520,000 settlers,. The settlements, which are illegal under International Law, impede Palestinian access to water and farmland.
The settlements were “leading to a creeping annexation that prevents the establishment of a contiguous and viable Palestinian state and undermines the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination,” the report said.
“Israel must cease settlement activities and provide adequate, prompt and effective remedy to the victims of violations of human rights,” Christine Chanet, a French judge who led the U.N. inquiry, told a news conference”
She also said, “All U.N. member states must comply with their duty under international law on the settlements, she said. “We have highlighted states’ responsibility because the facts we denounce are known. The problem is nobody is doing anything about it.” .
Her message to Israel was clear. Withdraw the settlers, get rid of the settlements, and provide compensation or face prosecution.
Now you know and I both know that Israel will ignore this edict in the same way that it has ignored all U.N. Resolutions and directives. We also know that the U.S. will again support Israeli criminality even though the U.S. is a member of the U.N.
We seem to be getting close to the stage where Israel could, in the light of this new condemnation, push the Palestinians out of the West Bank and Gaza and tell the world to ‘get stuffed!’
The war birds are circling. The war drums are beating. The threat of nuclear war has just increased yet again.
If there was a god, I would ask him to help us. But there is no god and the world is being run by madmen and anachronistic religious fanatics!
The result of such circumstances are entirely predictable!
