Two Presidential Contenders With Radically Different Agendas!

Well, Mitt Romney has come out and said that gay marriage cannot be supported. He is chasing the evangelical vote.

According to Reuters, at the Christian Liberty University, Romney went right at the latest hot-button issue, bringing much of the audience to its feet in cheers by declaring: “Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman.”

Many students and parents said that while they are wary of Romney’s religion, they would rather he occupy the White House than President Barack Obama who announced his support for same-sex marriage this week.

As previously reported in my last post, Obama says he is personally supportive of the gay agenda and must believe that that position will bring him more votes than he will lose via punishment from the ‘Christian’ folk for his views. Whether he is correct or not remains to be seen.

So it seems that Americans are to be divided by a deeply felt and conflicting social issue overlaid with conflicting political issues, racial issues and religious issues. It will be interesting to see how it pans out. Will the depth of feeling lead to blood in the streets? Possibly.

Of course, both contenders are politicians and they will choose the weasel words that give them the best chance of grabbing votes from either side of what could prove to be a very wide aisle. That is the nature of politics.

They will say different things to different audiences. They will say things that can be taken in different ways. They will try to walk on both sides of the street. But the issues are fairly stark and do not lend themselves to sitting on the fence.

The battle lines are drawn. Perhaps a bigger battle is coming than most people expect. Perhaps America might be split in two again, like a re-run of the Civil War?

Romney versus Obama, the political, racial, religious, social ‘Rumble in the Jungle’. It might prove to be an event where there are no winners, only a Pyrrhic Victory!

  1. Last night on TV we saw a programme about the American poor and unemployed living in tents among the bushes. That was a shocking sight! and I suppose the
American hopeful to get the job of president will not be happy that that is shown to the world.
Nowhere in the presidential race have I observed a statement about the poor in America and the jobless. After all did not the poor of Europe and Irish came all the way to America because of the dire poverty many Europeans lived in?
This president Obama ‘s roots also started in great poverty in the jungle of Africa.
Is the world again getting ready for someone like Marx and Engels.?
The money that is thrown away by American presidents to stay involved in the Middle East instead of looking after the poor of their own country!

  2. This presidential race! Bring religion in it as well ! What to think of the complicity of American politics! Poor God up there having to please all its believers.
Is it not repulsive and unbelievable that a presidential contest might be won on the basis of religion?
Why is the race not about living conditions ? and how to improve living conditions for ALL Americans. Forsake the race for once and distribute all the money the presidential race costs amongst the American poor who now live in tents and whose
children go to school without breakfast and are sick and undernourished.!!! maria

  3. I quite agree David, however it seems to me that the president and his assistants are so much after globalisation that they ignore the local problems. It was in last nights political program that is always on major NZ TV that we were shown this film about poverty in America.
And families living in tents and the children getting food at school. AND! the people were white Americans. I write : white because as I believe even with Obama as president, America still has a color problem.
And because ( in my opinion) the Jews in America play so much a political role in government, the government invests in Israel instead of their own country.

  4. This is how the elections for president go in the US. Pick a topic, any topic, as long as it is one that is of little real importance. Then, make sure that topic is very, very divisive. Now, play up your position on that topic and degrade the opponent for his/her stance opposing your position. It is ALL smoke and mirrors, a huge dog and pony show. Lots of smoke, zero substance.
Notice how REAL issues are very seldom, if ever, given a real discussion during a presidential campaign.
This is due to facts. Fact, IF the real economy were talked about, the people might actually rise up and toss out the overlords, the supposed “masters of the universe”, aka, the “too big to jail: banksters and Wall Street crooks. This is why “gay marriage” is the current “hot button” issue. In reality, gay marriage is NOT very important at all unless one is gay and wants to be married and have legal rights of a marriage.
I fail to see how a married, caring, loving gay couple would harm me or any family member or society in general. Again, this is a side issue at best and a huge diversion to keep the people in the dark as to the real state of the economy and the damn fool wars of choice the US is involved in.
Just my humble 2 cents worth.

  5. With seven billion people in the world, gay marriage seems to me to be natural birth control. With 5 kids, 7 grandkids and almost 4 great-grand kids, more gay marriages are needed to make up for my large family.

  6. Last week’s: Gay rights Obama vs. Homophobic school bully, Biff Romney really took our minds off of the millions of struggling poor and unemployment numbers that match the Great Depression.

  7. Yes, divide and conquer is a familiar tactic as is bread and circuses!

It is a cruel irony that people in America starve while its Government wages war and money it doesn’t have is spent on armaments.

    It’s values are arse-backwards!

  8. That place is not a University. Would you actually employ someone that went to a place where they have a creation museum? It is a joke institution. The ultimate expression of non-education.

If Romney is to be believed he will cut taxes and protect expenditure on the military. What does that mean? It would mean that all welfare programs and unemployment benefits would be cut alongside other programs such as food stamps. The result will be hard austerity. Hard to imagine the US with higher unemployment (the official figure is rubbish) and more people desperately trying to survive. No nation has ever experienced that level of privation without massive social dislocation.
