Friends, I know that you know that I am an atheist. But this headline fills me with fear. Why, you ask?
It’s because politics and religion are supposed to be separate with good reason. And the reason is that religion brings about a dangerous kind of absence of reason. Religion inhibits rational thought, hallelujah, praise the Lord.
But when you choose political leaders you need to be mentally acute, sharp as a tack because most politicians will take you down as quick as a biting snake, yes they will.
I believe it’s fair to say that the minds of religious people are filled with all manner of fantasies about angels, life after death, living forever, hell and eternal damnation, sins and lists thereof, etc, and that’s only the Christian religion. If you read up on all the claims of all religions you get a cocktail of things that is enough to drive you crazy. I mean, having 72 virgins waiting for you is enough to drive most men crazy, isn’t it?
But choosing a politician is an important thing so how do you get your mind in order, get the religious component out of it? Can scrambled eggs be unscrambled?
Well, Americans have solved the problem. They announce that they are supporting this religion-supporting politician or that hence spurning the clear separation that is supposed to separate politics and religion, praise the Lord, bring on the Rapture, hallelujah, hosannas!
It seems that the most important thing that each Presidential candidate needs to do is to appear to be more religious than all the others.
You have to demonstrate that you are born again, that you walk daily with the Lord, that he speaks to you (remember George W telling us that God told him to invade Iraq?), that you’re in His Good Books despite some minor infractions like a mistress or two or being rich or being married several times, that you can perform miracles with things economic, God Bless America, pass the ammunition!
And in Australia, it’s Sunday and all manner of Australians are attending Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and prayers and hymns are floating up to heaven… Well, that’s not true actually because most Australians don’t give two hoots about religion and are probably at the beach waiting to be eaten by a shark or to get skin cancer.
But the hard-core believers will be sitting on hard seats and singing and praying like there is no tomorrow and, yes, we do have evangelicals as well and they’ll be clapping their hands and swaying and getting worked up and waiting to speak in tongues or fall down in a contrived faint, well, you know what I mean.
But the important point is that Australians are not that religious and, unlike America, are not threatening the world with nuclear war as are the religious Christian folk in the U.S.. Food for thought, eh?
Have you ever asked yourself why a country like America, which claims to be Christian, is the world’s greatest warmonger? Doesn’t it strike you as passing strange that Jesus told his followers to love all others and not to covert their neighbor’s wife or their neighbour’s wealth and, importantly, not to kill, yet Christian America leads the world in killing and wanton destruction and greed?
We seem to have a disconnect between what Jesus Christ said and what His followers do, a profound disconnect. If fact, the more fanatical the Christian belief is, the more the extent and ferocity of the killing and destruction. And this seems to be reflected in other religions too, especially with Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, etc. Jesus, if he’s looking down, must be shaking his head is disbelief!
So friends, my Sunday message to you all is that religion seems to be making us worse and given our track record over thousands of years, that’s saying a lot!
And given Christian America’s behaviour over the last fifty years, the chances of us surviving another fifty seem remote.
If we took religion out of the human equation, that would be a good start. Then we would only have to concentrate on crooked politicians, and the Oligarchs, and the Psychos, and the Greedy, and the Military Killers, and the Rapists…
The only choices allowed for the American Sheeple will be whoever Israel allows to be in contintion. Whoever does the grandest job of kissing zionist a$$.. This country is done! It’s all just a game now. Soon there will be a false flag event to usher in a whole bunch of “you ain’t seen nothing yet.” America! It was a nice thought……..

The sad part is that it really believes it is a Christian country when the truth is that it is a grotesque parody of what Christianity is supposed to be about. I know the Bible very well and I know what its message is or was supposed to be.

That is why I hang out with Atheists! It is not necessary for me to dwell in beliefs when discussing the World. I personally believe that if there are 7 Billion people, there are 7 billion ways of understanding this life and what it means. We must all put aside beliefs and be as wise as serpents. Because as you noted these professional politicians are as clever as snakes and just love people with their heads in the clouds.

When my grandson asked me what I thought of religion I answered that Organized Religion is the cause of most of the pain and suffering on the earth. He responded by joining his girlfriend’s church anyway, got married and had a couple of babies. It’s a choice people make if they need someone out there to tell them what to think and how to live. Unfortunately churches are run by humans who often have there own agendas, for riches and power. And the sheeple just follow.
There is more to life than this.

In my opinion, organized religion has inflicted great harm to the planet, more so than anything else.
The very frightening thing is the delusions that the xtians here in the US have. They believe that they, and only they, heave a direct line to god. They are wedded to the zionist entity as their book says that the final battle between good and evil will take place in that region of the world. They believe this rot to the extent that you cannot have any sort of rational conversation with them on the “holy bible” and the supposed “prophecies” in that book.
The world is looking on in horror at the moronic clowns who are jockeying to be president of the US.
They have fallen for a fairy tale and they refuse to believe that their fairy tale is just that. They will go to the grave secure in the “knowledge” (sales knowledge) that they now “the truth”.
Very frightening and is gets worse every day.

Charlie, once religion gets its hooks into you, especially if you are very young, you have little chance of enjoying a religion-free life. Targeting little kids is unfair and immoral especially the way the evangelicals and Catholics do it.

Americans are insufficiently schooled about the world but rampantly ignorant about the Arabs and Islam. The 72 virigins are not mentioned in the Qur’an and only few Muslims believe in this worldly instinct but the wicked West would like to capitalize on this silly notion to turn the Christian fanatics and other violent Americans against Arabs and Muslims. Much of American knowledge of Arabs & Islam comes from fiction books and Hollywood. Since the Atheists have real problems with the Christian doctrine they assume that all or most religions must be as hallow as the Christian faith. Personally, I believe the Jewish faith is a cult and not a religion. There are 101 stupid “reasons” and “facts” the Americans have learned from their fiction books about Islam. Eventually the Americans will one day realize that they were wrong all along. After 50 years living in America I have found that majority of Americans have no common sense. Grace, there are 7 billion thinking brains out there but most of them are filled to the brim with mindless indoctrination. Getting rid of the indoctrination (which serves the purposes of the rich and powerful) would free up the brains to do what they are supposed to do which is THINK.
If 7 billion people thought, there would be no religion, no Oligarchs and Predators, no billionaires or Despots, no global warming or financial crisis, etc, etc.

Jamie, perhaps you don’t realize it but on this forum, most people aren’t interested in religion. Your comment above reads like a religious tract.
I’m sure you can find other blogs that welcome religious discussion but this one doesn’t. Most people on this blog think religion is one of the world’s major problems rather than a solution and I endorse that view strongly.

About the facts you mentioned here – I have nothing to comment for the moment.
I’m European and allow me to make one very important remark:
America is a CONTINENT (two actually), not a country. And US is just one country in American continents.
Millions and millions of people in American continents and lots of official governments strongly disagree with official US politics.
For outsiders like me – saying America but meaning US brings very wrong impression (and probably not only for outsiders).
Believe me or not – the last thing people, that have the guts to open their eyes, need right now is antagonism.

I like your blog and I respect the intentions of everyone on this blog. No one is discussing religion here. Jamie is talking about the history of the Bible and not the doctrine. Since you are the boss here so tell me what can we talk about and not talk about?
For example, I had no intention of posting anything here but when I read your comment about the 72 virgins I was compelled to respond – always searching for the TRUTH. I gave you the best response that I could; it was a short video by another Atheist Lesley Hazelton, which she superbly debunked the silly notion of 72 virgins.
Of course, you do not believe in the fantasy of the 72 virgins however you believe that it must be true that 1.2 billion Muslims have nothing else to do but to believe in this sleazy reward after death. Sir, it is the Western culture that’s suffering from a sexual depression not the Muslims. It was Sigmund Freud and his nephew Edward Bernays that imbedded sex in the Western culture. Sex has become a permanent fixture and that’s exactly why the Western economies are breaking down. The sex drive has produced greed and greed is what’s destroying humanity. This sexual disease is driving humans to fulfill their dreams by accumulating wealth; and to acquire wealth the Northern Hemisphere (mostly Europeans – Christianists and Judistanists) must conquer and divide the poor nations of the Southern Hemisphere to loot their resources. It is for this reason why we have all these wars.

Is it not all about sex? As Edward Bernays discovered that you could sell just about anything through sex. The evil human mind with sexual attractions will often buy things that they do not need at all. That has developed a society based on consumerism. With this success the marketing Gurus are trying to destroy other cultures. Muslims are the only people I know that are standing in the way of decadent Western Capitalist expansion that’s based on a contagious consumerism.

I enjoyed the link to the woman talking about the Koran. I found it enlightening. Thanks for sharing. The Catholics teach that you have to go through the priest to get to God. I always admired about Islam that a person goes to God themselves. I use the word God to describe that which created us. It is the most universal word, but I try not to limit my idea of Creation with a title. I am scared of religions because of my own experiences with belonging to a cult and a church. I like being able to separate church and state. I was raised believing in that. My parents talked about that since I was very young. I think there is a way t talk about religions without having to “believe” in that particular religion. Just my two cents.

I agree with what you have said but I must tell you that the Muslims were engaged in Philosophy, Medicine, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics … while Europeans were living in the Dark Ages. And it was the Muslims that civilized the Europeans who were so superstitious of even taking baths until the Muslims showed how. I mean that literally. The Muslims awakened Europe and taught them Philosophy, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, etc. But, the Western books claim that Western culture is all based on Greek and Roman and they deliberately have erased from their history and culture the fact that it was the Muslims that awakened the Europeans. This is a lengthy subject to talk about so let us focus on today. The world does not need to fear the Muslims.

Ah, Ahmad, having traveled extensively throughout Southern Europe and the Middle East I am well aware of the wonderful contribution of the Muslims to the region while the Northern European nations were engaged in barbarity, much as they are now!
While some aspects of Muslim culture today (Sharia Law) are also barbaric (stoning people to death, etc), I see some aspects of Islam as being a positive influence. But then I question all religions and feel that they are based upon a deliberate fraud, one that manipulates gullible people.
Once I was a devout believer, now I’m a devout atheist. That gives me insight into the way religion can affect people, how it can distort their thinking and influence their behaviour. Religion is divisive (my God is better than yours) and is used by some to advance their imperialism (the U.S. for example).
Regarding what can be spoken about on Dangerous Creation, the answer is anything. But I do not want to see the comments moving away from the Socratic way of debate towards parroting religious jargon and platitudes and false promises.
Grace, well named, manages to keep her spirituality intact and on show without forcing it down anyone’s throat. My position is that people can believe whatever they want if it helps them on life’s journey as long as they demonstrate a questioning mindset and a willingness to help to make this world a better place instead of seeing them concentrating on what rewards they think they are going to get in the mythical afterlife!

DeColonization of the mind is a great feat. As we don’t even know the things that are hidden. In Arizona, Chicano Studies were eliminated. It was an attempt to teach the native people to learn that their own ancestors contributed great things to civilization. Instead, ironically, on MLK DAY, books were banned and boxed up. Young minds were becoming de-colonized and the White Powers had to stop that! That the true history of the Muslim people is eradicated and replaced with something very limiting is how these Powers work. In Arizona they stopped Chicano Studies and put the kids to work as janitors. Got to keep these kids in their place. Nothing racist going on here. Don’t stop to look. Listen to Martin Luther King bellow about a dream, but don’t connect it to anything that is going on. I guess that Special Relationship between the Israeli Colonizers and USA is more clear.

Stoning women for adultery is only in the Bible and the Jewish Torah. Why do Westerners say things when they know they have no knowledge of the subject? In fact, the Bible and the Torah both calls for stoning of the women. On the other hand, the Quran does not condone stoning women but calls for punishing both the man and woman equally. Just read these verses of the Qur’an

The adulterer and the adulteress, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment. (24-2)
The adulterer shall not marry save an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress none shall marry save an adulterer or an idolater. All that is forbidden unto believers. (24-3)
And those who accuse honorable women but bring not four witnesses, flog them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony; they indeed are evil-doers. (24-4)

The Most remarkable thing about the Quran is that it treats men and women equally. The Quran repeatedly mentions “honorable men and honorable women” and “believing men and believing women” etc. On the other hand the Bible and the Torah caters mostly to men.
Muslims never say “my God is better than yours.” Only Christians & Jews say that. Muslims believe that Allah is the God of humanity but he is called differently in different languages.
It is not wise to quote a holy book when you have not read it at all. The Quran is not like the Bible or the Torah. No one is telling you to believe in the Quran; just don’t misquote. How could you do that if you have not read the Quran?
