Religious Fanaticism and Problem Solvers!

U.N.

Much ado about nothing?

Friends, many interesting things have occurred at the U.N. these past days. Two things for me have stood out:

- one is the statement that, according to Obama, the U.S. should not be left to solve the world’s problems alone and,

- the demand by Netanyahu that “…Western states stand up to what he called the Iranian government’s “religious fanaticism.”

Taking Obama’s statement first, I had the funny idea that a nation that has military bases all over the world probably is not so much trying to solve the world’s problems but has other things on its agenda.

Call me silly, but I thought that most people realized that America is heavily into imperialism via invasions and occupations, especially of countries that have oil. I think that Iraq shows that. I think that the invasion of Afghanistan had much to do with gaining access to oil and gas from the Baltic states.

I think that most people realize that America has not been called on to solve problems but, since Vietnam, has unilaterally used its military might to shape the world according to its own self-interest both political and economic.

To portray America as the poor nation that has been solving the world’s problems on its own is a complete fabrication and the reality is that it has caused more problems than it has solved. That said, Obama’s push for involvement with other nations is welcome but the proof of this intention will be found in the pudding.

Now to Netanyahu’s comment: it’s truly breathtaking.

When I read it I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Of all the nations in the world, nuclear-armed Israel leads the world in ‘religious fanaticism!” Its actions over the last sixty years shows clearly what happens when ‘religious fanaticism’ takes hold of a people. They become racist and conscienceless and deluded.

Of course, Iran is also guilty of ‘religious fanaticism’ (as are many deranged folk across the world some of whom want a nuclear war so that Jesus will return and sweep them up to heaven). Most religions have their fanatics.

Religious fanaticism of any  kind is dangerous and the fact that Netanyahu can’t see that he is a religious fanatic too highlights the danger that faces the whole of the Middle East.

Now the show moves to Pittsburgh and more speeches will be made and more hot air will be expelled. I wonder how much global warming has been exacerbated by the week’s activities.

More importantly, I wonder how much the world will change after it’s all over and whether, eventually, it’ll be business as usual with the rich getting richer and controlling the world much as they’ve always done.

Place your bets!

Ok I bet $1 towards things changing for the poor, homless, starving, destitute and end to conflict. Another bet of $10 bucks towards things staying the same or getting worse, which one will win? Any world leader who preaches about the evils of other religions fanatacism should have a mirror put in front of them while preaching. As for the climate change debate it should move away from it’s not to late to do something and instead focus on that it is already to late, we have past the point of no return, then finally we might get some united world government action. We are smart to an extent so when faced with doom humans would fight as hard as they can to reverse this course.

Kemosobi, I believe there are humans, ones with great power, that would sacrifice the world and themselves in order to make a quick buck or to gain more power.

Such is the power of greed and selfishness!

Americans placed a bet when they voted for Obama and they lost that bet big time.
I am not a betting person, but if I were it would be a sure thing that nothing is going to change. Any halfway intelligent person can see the problems and we are still doing nothing real to solve them. I am trying, with my lifestyle, to live a simpler life, to cut my carbon footprint and to have a lesser impact on the world, but I know that what I am doing is making no real difference.
It isn’t just a few wealth CEOs doing the dirty deed.
We all share some responsibility for what is happening.
How can people be so selfish as to sacrifice the future of their children and grandchildren not for real needs, but just frivolous, momentary desires?
We all, in the first world, need to make sacrifices now so there will be a livable future for our children.

Hi David, great article. Thank you!

I agree that America has been expanding it’s empire. I think it’s about oil and power. I wish that Obama would start dismantling all military bases overseas and bring those military men and women back home. But I don’t see that happening. It’s disgusting!

I have a question for you. And I know this will never happen but what do you think the immediate outcome would be if we all woke up tomorrow morning and all the fossil fuels were gone? Even the gasoline that was in your car the night before? The world would be thrown into utter chaos and there could be no more empire building for oil. But do you think the powers that be would fill that void with a new energy source right away? What would be the next empire building adventure?

The minute that question came to my mind I started looking at my home and my lifestyle and realized that I wouldn’t even be prepared to provide food for my family without this oil economy. We are a globe addicted to oil and it’s my understanding that “Peak” oil has already been reached. I wonder if there’s time for families to start to transition themselves away from oil lifestyles or if the powers that be will destroy the planet first? …And about those religious fanatics? They scare me more than anything!!

Jeannie, it is amazing that so many people have no thought for anything beyond their own immediate gratification. It came about when the ‘me-first’ generation was born about forty or fifty years ago. Of course this concept was encouraged by capitalists for obvious reasons.

It seems we humans will pay a heavy price for our selfishness.

Kathy, if that happened we would be forced to return to a more simple agrarian, family-centred lifestyle. I would see this as a real bonus.

The truth is that humans, because of technology, have forgotten what they are.
