Can David Beat Goliath?

Soviet Guerrilla Fighters (also known as Resistance or Freedom Fighters).
Friends, in our modern world there are several current situations which involve a David versus Goliath military contest. We have a variety of small countries that have been invaded and occupied by militarily powerful superpowers. The result of such a contest is predictable. Or is it? Thanks to Che, it’s not!
Some time ago, the Russian Goliath invaded and occupied Afghanistan. After many years the Russians withdrew with egg on their faces because, though they had a huge advantage in armaments and military technology, they couldn’t defeat a shadowy, determined guerrilla army who avoided direct confrontation (open warfare) where they would’ve been quickly exterminated.
Instead they used small arms and improvised explosives. They used their knowledge of the local terrain and weather to advantage. They inflicted casualties then withdrew before the superior army could marshal their planes and missiles. The superpower never knew where they would be attacked next and they couldn’t attack such a shadowy enemy because they never knew who they were.
The Palestinians, until they became hopelessly split, had their occupiers seriously worried.
They employed guerrilla tactics and used suicide bombers who went out and, in buses or restaurants, gave their lives to inflict damage on their occupiers (similar damage to that being inflicted upon them when Israeli missiles blew up inhabited houses and apartments or tanks and IDF snipers shot their children).
Eventually the militarily powerful Israelis had to build huge concrete walls to lessen the impact of suicide bombers and the real fear they engendered.
The Vietnamese resisted and finally defeated the huge American War Machine using guerrilla tactics in the beginning until they got a shadowy land army mobilized. They inflicted huge casualties on the invaders who were finally forced to admit defeat and withdraw.
For David to beat Goliath, it requires unity, determination, avoidance of open warfare, skillful use of local knowledge, improvisation, bravery, self-sacrifice, and a just cause such as seeking freedom from occupation or oppression and protecting communities.
Currently, there are plenty of just causes that are begging for solutions. And the solution, the one I’ve outlined, is there if only those who are being wrongly oppressed could grasp it and work together to bring about justice.
To fight for what is right is noble!

The ultimate defeat for the Soviets was due to the Americans supplying the afghans with stinger missiles. These missiles were able to shoot down Russian choppers flying lower than 10000 feet, which were previously unhindered in their operations.
With the Vietnamese it was the Viet Cong (commie community defence) who did most of the Guerilla fighting in the south and took the heaviest toll, with the regular NVA doing the planning, logitics and operations of all battles, but leading major offensives likes Tet, Kha Sahn, Hue, Saigon, Kham Duc and Quang tri battles.
For David to defeat Goliath it takes what you say but one other very important aspect…..a powerful ally. The Taliban have Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, the Ho Chi Minh and Gneral Giap had the Soviets and Deng Xiaoping , DPRK has China, Fidel had the Soviets, Even Mao had Stalin. “We shall fight the Americans till the very last Vietnamese” Mao Zedong

In the meantime, Goliath is always trying to infiltrate David. It is up to Americans and Israelis to help Goliath from being killed off from within its ranks. Sigh!! Thanks for your contribution, Kemosabi.

Kemosobi,
agree – who do the Palestinians have?

The Palestinians have no one who is supplying them with material support, they have the muslim world giving vocal support and even Iranians trying to help in humanitarian ways. Their key ally is now dead (Saddam). When they were united and had Saddam backing them they were a formidable force (as David points out) but the jews and yanks split them, killed their main supporter and built walls to contain them. Now they are a shadow of themselves, but resistance is not futile, it never is, in what ever form.

Kemosobi, thanks for supplying further details about the various theatres of war I mentioned.
Regarding having an ally, this is also important. The Palestinians do get some military aid (mainly small arms) from Hezbollah and some say Iran. Other countries could be involved as well. Getting heavier weapons into the West Bank and Gaza is made difficult by the IDF.
It’s obvious that Middle Eastern countries need to unite as do the Palestinians. Then they could begin a guerrilla war against the Israeli-American imperialist coalition, given that they can’t possibly win an open war.
If Israel can be knocked out of the equation (or weakened significantly) then some balance will return to the Middle East and a possibility of peace.

Thanks so much, David and commentators. You are all so virtuous!! Raimondo at antiwar.com radio this week, says he thinks it will be decades before there is a massive movement for liberty and peace, in the USA.

Please excuse the mistaken comment above. So sorry.
I do want to acknowledge Cindy Sheehan and REAL peace activists, for plans to camp-out and protest Obama at his summer retreat (so he hopes} at Martha’s Vineyard next week.

Therese, I can never understand why the majority of Americans are so pro-war! Perhaps it’s because they’ve never been occupied or experienced invasion and war on their soil.
Thanks, Catauro. The recipe is simple. History shows that it works.
