And He Arose!

Friends, in keeping with the Easter spirit I present you with this good news story. David Keohane, an Irish tourist, was bashed into a coma in August of 2008. Of course, I do not claim that him being bashed was good news. That comes later.

Even since the tragic event, which does little to commend a visit to my country, David has been visited by his family who have mounted a vigil by his bedside. As you can see from the photograph, he is surrounded by all the marvels of modern medical technology which have helped to keep him alive even though his brain was technically ‘dead’. His father is shown looking anxiously at his son, searching perhaps for some sign that he might regain consciousness.

Well, call it a miracle if you will but David, during the Easter celebrations, arose from seven months of beingĀ  ‘dead’ and, to the absolute delight of his family and medical staff, recognized them! According to the news this morning, he is not fully recovered but is making good progress. It does give weight to the old saying that ‘where there is life, there is hope’.

Friends, I think there is a clear message in that old saying for all of us.

A friend of mine recently converted to Catholicism and, by way of explanation for his atypical behavior, told me that he was taking out some insurance in case he died. He seems to think that converting so late in life was going to guarantee entry into the heavenly ivory halls where angels wing their way about and choirs sing hymns and someone called God sits on a golden throne and, well, I’m not exactly sure what He does but surely it must be important.

I did not bother to rain on his parade. I did not bother to point out that there is absolutely no evidence for believing in the existence of any heavenly place. I did not bother to point out that no one has ever come back from the dead even though some folk still believe that after 2008 years Jesus will reappear one day. Sadly, dead is dead and that’s the end of it.

But where there is life there is hope and I’m sure that you, with me, wish David a full recovery and we are certainly glad that he arose from the dead this Easter weekend!

  1. Fantastic and happy story for those involved – indeed.

Life is like a roulette. Some – the most lose, few (the sheeple’s ?) wins. Those who win’s believe, for a time, they’re in control until the roulette spells disaster and they begin to ask the Almight for help.
Human beings – do NOT like, NOT to be in control, or with other words WILL NOT ACCEPT CONDITIONs OF LIFE – can not bare to live a life in completely dependency from nature/auxilliaries.
This, I believe, is the reason that the they call on / ally with a entity who’s believed to be (in control.

  2. Happy Easter to you all on this site…my question is David..where did the light of consciosness go during thiose lost seven months? What happened to entice the reurn of that human’s light to the body? The Love surrounding him is what I have seen to be the needed pull back to the body..As a nurse I was always acutely aware of when a departure from life occurred…Kate

  3. John, I agree that non-acceptance of life’s reality is why most cling to religion and why they suspend their intellect.

Kate, it seems that David’s brain following the assault was on standby for seven months while it tried to recover. The rest of his body functioned as per normal with the assistance of the technology. Obviously the presence of his family must’ve helped.

He’s lucky to have such a family!

  4. Kate: maybe what you call the light of consciousness went to the same place that our
‘divine sparks’ go when we fall asleep. My reason for thinking this is that many people in coma report being aware of what is said around them…they are unable to respond, not that I’ve ever heard anyone say it troubled them to be unable to respond.

I had a cousin who was in a coma for a few months & when he came back to life he couldn’t speak, I’ve saved notes he scrawled, they were very primative, childlike, he complained in notes about not being fed, he also asked me in writing where he could relieve himself, although he was entubated at every orafice, this is what he was concerned about.

We talked to him everyday when he was comatose, months later he brought up a few
facts I’d told him when he seemed brain dead. Kinda spooky.

  5. Kate..I think you are right//it appears the brain recieves info/data and the mind makes what sense it can of the picture of the objective outside reality..patients post anesthesia, would tell me about altered states of consciousness that had occurred after being given serious psych altering drugs…I have long been fascinated with the emerging field of Psycho-neuro- Immunolgy/. I also found Mercy given to us as it is actually easier to forget great pain..events right before and during great pain and crisis..otherwise women for sure would not go thru repeated childbirth!!
