Last weekend, in the Sydney Domestic Air Terminal, two rival bikie gangs had a confrontation. The result was that one man was bashed to death while many members of the public who witnessed the battle, were traumatized. Once the incident was over several of the participants took taxis and left the scene.
Thus far, strangely, video cameras don’t seem to have captured the brawl. Of course, the fact that this occurred in a major transport hub highlights the poorness of airport security which must be good news for terrorists who might be looking for a target.
The airport incident is not an isolated one. There have been quite a few deaths recently of gang members in various states via drive-by shootings and shoot-outs. It highlights the power that gangs have, gangs called Hell’s Angels and The Bandidos and Gypsy Jokers.
Gang members typically look rather confronting and unintelligent. These gangs, which are found in most Australian capital cities and in New Zealand, are heavily involved with drugs and prostitution and money laundering. They operate from strongly-protected ‘headquarters’. They are a blight on society.
Then, on the other side of the world, we have the Mexican equivalent, the drug cartels, where the Mexican Government is using the army to try to stop the carnage (in the thousands) between the various cartels.
The cartels provide America with drugs and America kindly provides them with assault rifles and grenade launchers. And in Sicily recently I noticed rallies being held against the Mafia which is a criminal gang with its tentacles all over the world. The Mafia also engage in wars between various branches or clans.
Now I’m not a gang-type person. I look at these unkempt, leather-wearing, chain-festooned bikie gang members when they appear in my country town and wonder why anyone would want to associate with such a bunch of thuggish losers and criminals. Why would any person want to be seen as an oaf, an intellectual dwarf, a ill-mannered, ugly Neanderthal who needs to be surrounded by a 100 clones to feel brave? Beats me! Probably the same reason that mongrel dogs hunt in packs.
The Governments in Australia, State and Federal, are talking about how they can break up these gangs who continue to pose a threat to all law-abiding citizens. Similar moves are afoot in Mexico.
It can’t come soon enough! Let’s gang-up on gangs.

These groups form a “shadow economy” that are operated off the books of the world economy wwhile playing an essential part to the economic pie. These issues are never addressed by the economic owners. Just think, if we decriminalized and legalized drug use the prisons would not make the money they currently do and the real reasons for our drug use would be looked at to reduce demand…look at Calif. esp Mendicino County–this is their tax base-marijuana growing operations–changes are coming…it is always the unintended consequences we must look out for.
I have a feeling the US will, under the pretext of national security, literally annex northern Mexico.

Here in Arizona there’s a lot of collateral damage caused by the Mexican drug cartels civil war. The Mexican government sent 45,000 Army troops to quell the violence, to no avail. There are an estimated 100,000 cartel “soldiers”, better armed than the Army, and totally ruthless. Over 7,000 people were killed in 2008, often savagely tortured and mutilated before being executed, each side trying to intimidate the other with more horrific violence. When the parents of a kidnapped 5 year old girl were unable to pay a ransom the child was killed by being injected with battery acid. What kind of monster can do this? Yet this is their mentality, and woe to those standing in their way…

Thanks Coyote-you are up early!–my brother is in Tucson and what you say is true and beyond the ability of most Americans to understand…more violence, guns and steel are not the answer–interesting that beheading is a favorite form of death in this war…also a favorite for of death for millions of indigenous peoples during the Conquistador takeover–with machetes..

You are pointing out specific types of gangs. Types that are easy to identify because their members look dangerous. Types that does not claim to operate in the best interests of society. Types that do not kill in the name of God or Justice or Progress. Types that are more likely to kill their own because of some perceived disloyalty or infraction than members of another gang, and more likely to kill another gang member than a member of the general public. By the way I have tons of documentation at my fingertips to back up my assertions but I am not going to share it because I do not want to.
Since I have a PHD in psychopsychology I can state with absolute certainty that people join for the following reasons. They are dangerous and they get a kick out of proving it. Just like people in the military only gang members get to prove it much more often, or die trying. For a sense of belonging to a “brotherhood” that shares their macho and anti social values. For getting recognition and attention because gang members lack the ability to get recognition and attention any other way except possibily to join the military but most of them lack the self dicsipline to survive in the military and they know it. For many it is seen as a short cut to riches. That is something the military can certainly not offer. But the military offers a much better chance of staying out of prison and early retirement benefits to boot if you can survive a couple tours of duty in the colonies. But the gangs have no restrictions on sexual harassment.
So when we gang up on the gangs how should we gang up on them? More specifically how do civil liberties fit in to destroying these low class gangs? Do the gang members deserve some kind of way in which they can retreat from their life style without going cold turkey? Are they capable of living a non criminal life style?

I guess if the whole world system collapses we could all be part of community gangs (tribes) that fight with each other for scarce resources like food and clean water. Scary, eh?

David, these bikie gangs are solely responsible for the drug ICE and amphetimines in general, How? Well originally these gangs held the market because they introduced it, even manufactured it. The problem here is that they restricted themselves on its production to keep the price of the product at a reasonable high rate, similar to OPEC and oil. Once they did this the Asian gangs managed to start their own manufacturing ring of ICE and other gangs followed suite, with the bikies becoming less relevant in this market and turning their attention to empire building which saw the amalgamation of numerous small gangs into the big ones like the comacheros and hells angels. The so called good bikies left, as they didn’t want to be part of an international criminal organisation and are now referred to as HOGS and live normal civil lives (which answers painemarxqueenbuddhas’ question). Weapons are a key component of any criminal organisation with bikie gangs always having what they call a Sergeant of arms who controls the weaponry (including purchasing and distribution between brother chapters) and delegates weapons during a war dependant on chapter needs and coordination with chief command. Bikies live for wars and confrontation it makes themselves seem relevant when indeed they are a scourge to greater society. They have a mentality that goes like this, you are my brothers keeper, I have spoken to many ex bikies and they all agreed that dickheads come into the organisations and expect to be backed up as a brother would regardless of how messed up they are and the trouble they cause. I know a bloke who is a ninth Dan master and he lives for the opportunity to kick bikie arse, to an extent that local bickies avoid him like the plague and he has knocked out nearly every bikie in my town, and some come back for more occasionally to no avail.

It’s a sad thing that these types of GANGS give motorcycle enthusiasts a bad name. As NOT ALL bikers are like this. They call themselves 1%ers. As they are only 1 percent of the biker community.

It is funny that Ralphe chose to bring up the issue of gun control in relation to gangs.
I was just getting ready to write about gun control on the other thread where I had written about gun control earlier. On that thread i wrote that in general private citizens should be limited to two shot firearms.
There was a report on TV about German sport shooting clubs tonight. It asked the question of whether or not those clubs that practiced not just target shooting but combat shooting like a police swat team would practice are going to far. If some one with this sort of training and a combat weapon went on a rampage the death toll could be not 17 as in the recent German school shooting but 70 or maybe even 117.
But there is another, on the other hand. That is that throughout history most governments have been led by people not trying to serve their societies but to fleece their societies.
Police and the military have been the tools of this fleecing. Perhaps it is better that we live with this risk of a rampage rather than live in a society in which people lack the training to defend themselves from oppression. Some of you may not be aware of this but marksman ship skills have to be practiced on a regular basis or else they get rusty.
Now certain precautions can be put in to place so that someone who wants to go on a rampage does not have to easy a time of taking a weapon outside of a designated area.
Also the caliber of multi shot weapons (over 2) could be limited to .22cal shorts.
Now one argument that comes to mind, which goes against my own proposal for which I have no answer is, that even if a society is well armed and trained if they can not organize a defense against an unjust government because any attempt to do so would be detected and
the organizers eliminated in the beginning stages of organization, then all of their weapons and training is useless anyways. These weapons are just another distraction to take up peoples time so that they have less time to think. The weapons and training are also useless if the people have been so brainwashed that they think they are being protected by their government from evil aliens of all types when if fact these aliens do not really exist or are not as bad as the government in power.
Still if I lived in a country on earth and not in the stratosphere like I do I would want to live in a country in which the government officials and their armed enforces always had some doubt in the back of their minds with how much they could get away with. If they go down the road of fleecers rather than shepherds. A well armed and trained citizenry is one step in creating that doubt but it is obviously not sufficient.
(Let me clarify what I mean by well armed. One 2 shot weapon could be kept at home for each person over 21 or perhaps 22. But multishot weapons could be kept at a sporting club.)

Now for a bit of childishness. I had this thought that perhaps the best solution to the criminal biker problem is if some genius psychologists could come up with a plan to infiltrate these groups and through psychological manipulation get the members to out grow their desire to be an outlaw. But then I had an even better idea lace their food with large amounts of estrogen.

Art, it is true that there are ‘nice’ bikers. These gangs are quite different and use their large ‘machines’ and uniforms to terrorize!

Paine, keeping only single-shot weapons at home might be a compromise position but having no weapons at all would be better. Guns are for killing after all!
The estrogen idea has merit. The only problem is the tough bikies might grow breasts which might spoil their image somewhat.
