A Veritable Feast!
Friends, in case the banks go belly up in the next few weeks, I don’t want to leave you in the lurch should you begin to feel peckish. Just grab your butterfly net, an axe and your mattock and get ready to gorge.
People all around the world eat insects. Some do it by accident but others do it by choice. Cockroaches, scorpions, moths, grubs, grasshoppers, caterpillars, large ants, spiders, virtually anything that flies or crawls can be deep-fried or grilled.
You can go hunting during the day or, with a torch, at night. Use your axe to peel the bark back on trees. The mattock can be used to lift large stones or to dig for worms and grubs. The butterfly net will capture all manner of flying thingees if you’re quick enough: dragonflies, moths, butterflies, all manner of creatures flutter about just begging to be caught. If you happen across a snake or lizard or a rat throw that in your game bag too but try to keep them from eating the rest of your catch or each other.
Now I wouldn’t recommend redback or funnelweb spiders because they might have a bite but most other insects, while they don’t looking apetisising, are really quite nutritious. Make sure the oil is hot then throw them in. Cook until golden brown (see photograph) and crisp. Then serve with several sauces and a mound of rice if you’ve managed to hoard some before the stores went bankrupt.
There, before you know it you’ll be surviving the depression in style. Those wealthy folk, the ones who will continue to eat Scotch Fillet, they won’t know what they’re missing!
Serves them right.
we don’t have insects the size of houses here in new york state david
and i have a real phobia of snakes- so i guess there will be one less american on the planet if it comes to that.
but all you say is true. they are actually quite rich in protein and millions eat them daily.

As a vegetarian i will go carrot and potato hunting instead. Those i can catch without breaking my neck.

Betmo, desperate times call for desperate measures.
Lucy, at least carrots and potatoes can’t run or bite you!
Take care.

Gosh, David. You really think that the times have come to insect eating?!

That photo make them grubs look almost gourmet. As though they had marinated all day. Times are a changing and quickly. People of Haiti ate dirt. It is hard to imagine, but then it was probably hard to imagine the lack of necessities suffered by Iraqis and too many others to list in this little writiing box. Cause and effect are one Universal truth that have nothing to do with religions. There are truths that pertain to life that are separate from belief systems and this is what we must strive for as a species. Religions foment hate and fear of “other” than ourselves. The truth is that Life: body, mind, spirit exists with or without religion. As I see it, religions try to lay claim to the truth that is life, for their own power and profit. Very little genuine altruism goes on among governments and religions.
If the memory that friends somewhere are eating grubs and surviving, and it will give me the strength to eat grubs and survive, then that’s a good thing as Martha Stewart used to say in better times.
Bon apetit! and Merci.
I am practicing my French. It is good to remember the French Revolution too. Thanks for that David.

‘The truth is that Life: body, mind, spirit exists with or without religion.’ Great point, Grace!

I might add, cooking them on a solar stove. Solar stoves really work good. I know what to ask for come High Holy days in December. Excellent for carrots and potatoes too. I will also suggest growing wheatgrass. The juice will supply your blood with rich chlorophyll. I admit, my goal is to hav a years supply of food, just like the Mormons! Who knew?!

Solar sounds great, Grace. However, if the world’s financial markets keep going into free-fall, they mightn’t be available. Get yours soon everyone!

Thanks for all the nudging to prepare for the worst, here in the USA. For sure, the dear Haitians are experiencing the worst, as, in my opinion, the Iraqis, and most of the residents of Gaza. Certainly, the Somalians are being pushed to there.
