Who Exactly Are God’s Children?

Friends, over millennia people have been arguing about who are God’s Children. The Jews got in early and staked their claim. They based their claim on the Torah. In Israel now, the Jews are staking their claim using F-16s, Apache helicopters, nukes and methods that have been borrowed from the Nazis.

Of course, the Christians are another group who would claim a favoured position. They base their claim on the Bible and, more recently, achieving military superpower status. However Christians are divided into three competing groups: Catholics, Protestants and Evangelicals. Little love is lost between them
(as Ireland would attest) even though they claim that their mutual God is Love. Each group believes strongly that ‘it’s their way or the highway’.

Another groups are the Muslims who base their claim on words in the Koran and, curiously, also on armed might (Pakistan has nukes). Over centuries, Christians and Muslims have had many wars. Now Muslims claim their God (Allah) will, upon their death, take them up to paradise and, for the men, make available to them 72 virgins. What the women get is unknown to me. Perhaps they are remade into virgins!

Then we have the Hindus and the Buddhists. The Hindus have hundreds of God’s which, in a way, must be a blessing because, after all, one God can only look after just so many children. They also have nukes. The Buddhists (who are generally peaceful) have elevated Buddha into a god-like status even though the original Buddha was espousing a practical philosophy for surviving life not a theology that promises life after death (which does appear to be somewhat of a contradiction).

The above mentioned are probably the main claimants but there are, spread across the world, a zillion religious splinter groups whose contradictory beliefs and claims defy enumeration. We have Mormons, Plymouth Brethren, Jehovah’s Witness, Seven Day A Week Bikeriders, Satanists, etc.

Then, to complicate issues still further, we have national and/or racial groups who claim that God is on their side. Why, the American claim they are one nation under God and have a Manifest Destiny to make the whole world into their unfortunate image. The Germans with God on their side had a similar objective as did the British, the Dutch, the Portuguese, the Spanish, the Moors, the Mongols, etc, etc.

Friends, as an atheist,  I admit to being confused by all this. I don’t know who’s who! Who do you think God’s Children are? Am I to go to my grave not knowing? Could I, like a friend of mine, yet be converted and live forever adoring and singing praises to…er…one God or another?

Please enlighten me!

Dear David, you forgot the best item of all: “The Hybrid”. I love the “Hybrid”. He smartly collects, adapts, modifies and propagates his own version of “universal truth” religion. To explain myself better: it looks like this: he is a typical modern christian (most of the times), with his perennial references to Jesus , mixing quotes from Bible and Some Om Mani Padme Hum Sri Guru, Dalai Lama enlightened one, practicing a latest trend in Christianity in some Christian Meditation Bikram in New Jersey…. he had never read any of the texts he is quoting, but he is too busy gathering adepts granting access to Universal Truth Within, in exchange for a small fee (VISA, PAY PAL accepted) at his Non Lucrative Site, where you can find the Cheats and Tricks of Easy path to Enlightement.

That s the best Guy. Listen to him also. He s the latest trend. Church is outdated, and they could learn a lot from this guy.

People , beware of this new religion…

It s something like the Globalization. Religion’s entrepreneurs, so prolific throughout the history, couldn t miss this opportunity.
Could they?

Who do you think God’s Children are?

The atheists–like Zeus they banished their father (Kronos) in order to take their place at the top of pantheon.

Adina, as usual your contribution is valuable and insightful.

Swans, in some areas my enlightenment is more than I really need. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss!

Kvatch, what a shame they were not more popular. The world would’ve saved itself so much grief and killing.

Cheers and Peace.

God is with whoever needs a fig leaf to hide their latest crimes against humanity. It is amazing how stating that ‘God is on our side’ makes everything alright.

Please don’t let all the depravity and barbarity of modern life get you down, David G. I know I know which groups to blame.

Depravity and barbarity are two good words to describe major aspects of our world, Swan.

It is hard to rise above such things when we live in such a cesspool!

When will people all realize we are in the same boat? Even Jesus Christ on the cross felt that he was perhaps all alone. Gov.Palin wanted to have books removed from the Alaska library that had any reference to doubting God. She would have to have had the Bible removed too. The only things we know for sure are the scientific truths. It is said that there is a mystical thread that connects all religions. Every religion has had some mystic that didnt fit into the box. These spiritual types seem to enlighten their own religious leaders. So far of what I can tell, the Dalai Lama is the most relevant spiritual teacher of our time. He says that in order for the humans to continue on Earth, we must overcome our differences. As humans, we have much in common with our fellow humans. If we focus on the things that we all share in common, then we can overcome all that would keep us at war. For sure, something that is greater than a human created the variation and beauty of this planet. To this I am humbled. I am done with being humbled by humans who claim to have the answers. Very few humans inspire this sort of humility.

There is my delayed response to a question that may never go out of style.

Nicely put, Grace. If we could remove the ego from the human equation, we’d make a gigantic leap forward.

Peace.
