How many gold medals will be won by drug cheats?

Where’s the Thorpedo this time around? I sincerely hope Phelps is clean because he is outstanding in his discipline.
It’s an indictment of our dishonest, win by any means, world that we can no longer admire any athlete without wondering if they are on the best performance-enhancing drugs that money can buy, Lucy!
The Ancient Greeks showed the way. We have dirtied their heritage
True David, It is hard to be unquestioning and accepting of tremendous success on its face value. I want to believe it is drug free. Maybe it is really the best of the best including high tech swim gear, super smart food, the way he is built. But gee, to watch the weight of a nation’s success on one athletic performance. Something appropriate about this being in China: success at all costs mentality. Cheers!
I cannot comment on the drugs matter, I don t know who the guy is, as i don t follow these competitions.
But Olympics still bug me from many perspectives: it indeed entertains, and make one feel ambitious to exceed.
At the GAME. Played by the RULES. Seems to me humanity has no problem to play the GAME by the RULES, as well as to changing the GAME and altering THE RULES as and when deemed appropriate.
I have friends who watch Olympics and hope that US wins to show Chinese they still have no power. Is that what Olympics should do? Political agenda… Nationalism.. hidden under the presentable marketing of All Nations Together? (minus Tibet, minus Iran.. minus the ones who do not play the GAME by the RULES)…
Chinese ambitions also freak me out: proving that they excel.. and the great nation that they are… yeah right.. and some may believe. Look at the development.. wow .. china is capitalist.. wow,… fireworks.. wow…
So I sit here and I dream of a new kind of Olympics. Human Individuals, with NO NATION, competing against the results of HIMSELF last year.. It is boring I know. For it is not evolution and excellence that is really wanted.
Entertainment will do. Sense of national pride will do as well.
And this can only be achieved by the GAME and its RULES …
The perpetual GAME, since historical times, which is simply competing against the OTHER, any OTHER.. under the mascarade of a form or another.
I know you are right about winners being eyed with suspicion and i imagine that there will be a few positive tests before the end of the Olympics, i just hope that Phelps is clean so to prove that you don’t have to resort to artificial help to be a winner. It would be a devastating blow if he has been cheating.
Adina, national pride is, next to religion, one of the most dangerous and divisive elements in our world. If we could get rid of both we might achieve peace.
Lucy, I believe there are drugs in use that are unknown to authorities. Perhaps the Olympics is more about competition between pharmaceutical companies.

Lucy, it’s hard to believe that Phelps could be that good at so many different disciplines.
Grace, if I had to cheat to win at anything there would be nothing in it for me.
Problem is that if cheating is as widespread as I assume it is then decent, honest people have no chance of winning gold.
Marion Jones et al showed the way and, sadly, many will follow.

I am such a book goon, and could care less who wins at sports, drugged or not. Sorry!
