Some can. But far too many fear change of any sort.
Annie, I feel sorry for aware Americans like you. Unfortunately the religious and nationalistic indoctrination that most Americans get proves to be too strong.
David, I’ll be living next door to you in New Zealand. “Home” for me is there, not the US (I lived in Christchurch briefly for a “trial run” last year and will be back permanently in the next year or two). I cannot live here in the US any longer– I have felt like an alien (culturally & politically) here in my own country of birth for years. Sad, huh?
And even if Obama wins in November, very little will change. Maybe some minor tweaks in the rhetoric, but the same arrogance, insularity and willed ignorance will remain.
Obama is hardly what I’d call a “liberal”– though by the talk around here in the US you’d think he was some dangerous radical. That’s how far to the right political discourse has been skewed.
